Aromatic Alchemy using Frankincense
From soothing muscles and joints to grounding the mind and uplifting the spirit, Frankincense offers a multitude of benefits.
Frankincense has long been treasured not only for its captivating aroma but also for its unique blend of chemical properties and diverse therapeutic benefits. This article explores the intriguing chemical composition of Frankincense essential oil, its various applications, and some DIY blend examples that you can easily incorporate into your wellness routine.
Chemical Composition and Safety Notes
The Frankincense Boswellia sacra species we offer comes from India and boasts a complex chemical composition with more than 17 different components, lending to its versatility and therapeutic benefits.
- Monoterpenes: Renowned for their ability to rejuvenate and repair damaged tissues, with additional antimicrobial and immune-stimulating properties.
- α-thujene: (26 – 47%) Known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, supporting skin health and reducing inflammation. Also found in Clove Bud and Marjoram essential oils.
- α-pinene: (as much as 11%) Offers anti-inflammatory, bronchodilator, and calming effects, supporting respiratory health and promoting mental clarity. Also present in Pine, Rosemary, and Cypress essential oils.
- Sesquiterpenes: These compounds can cross the blood-brain barrier, enhancing mood, promoting neurological health, and providing grounding effects. Found in Sandalwood, Vetiver, and Patchouli essential oils.
- Limonene: Provides uplifting and stress-relieving benefits, along with antioxidant and digestive support. Also found in Grapefruit, Bergamot, and Sweet Orange essential oils.
Blends well with: Black pepper (Piper nigrum), most citrus (especially Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) and Orange (Citrus sinensis)), Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica), Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), Juniper (Juniperus communis), Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin), and Sandalwood (Santalum album).
Safety Notes:
- Frankincense is generally considered nontoxic, non-irritating, and non-sensitizing.
- Avoid using old or oxidized oils, as they may cause skin sensitization.
- As with all essential oils, ingestion is not recommended as it may cause harm.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- GRAS status: Generally recognized as safe when used properly.
- Perform a patch test before topical use to ensure no adverse reactions.

Emotional Grounding Diffuser Blend - Diffuse following manufactures instructions to create a calm, grounded environment and ease the days stress away
- 3 parts Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)
- 2 parts Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
- 4 parts Frankincense
Physical Wellness
Frankincense is also celebrated for its potential to support joint health, particularly for conditions like osteoarthritis. Its anti-inflammatory properties can provide comfort when blended with a carrier oil and applied topically to affected areas.
Soothing Joint Support Massage Oil
Gently massage onto joints for comfort and relaxation. In a glass container, measure out 1 oz (2 tablespoons) carrier oil, add oils, mix well and massage as needed.
The ginger and black pepper will add some heat to this blend and is not recommended for those with sensitive skin – remember to do a patch test before using. Avoid contact with sensitive areas, eyes, or mouth – wash hands after use.
· 1 oz / 2 tbsp / 30 ml carrier oil - Jojoba, Hemp or Sweet Almond
· 8 drops Frankincense
· 6 drops Lavender
· 4 drops Ginger or Black Pepper or Geranium
30 ml carrier oil with 18 drops = 3% dilution
Skin Care
This oil is a favorite in skincare routines, known to support healthy, radiant skin and minimize the appearance of fine lines or scars. Using essential oils in face care lotions and serums gives you the added benefit inhaling the therapeutic components of all oils. When using essential oils on your face, ensure oils are diluted at 1% to avoid irritation or burns. Avoid getting into your eyes
Radiant Skin Serum
In a glass container with a tight fitted lid, measure carrier oil, add essential oils, mix well
· 1 oz / 2 tbsp / 30 ml carrier oil - Jojoba, Hemp or Sweet Almond
· 2 drops Frankincense
- 2 drops Geranium
- 2 drops Carrot or Myrrh
Mix well. Apply a small amount to your face at night for glowing skin. Use within 6 weeks for optimal freshness. Avoid mixing water into serum / keep tightly closed
