Pink Grapefruit

Common Name: Pink Grapefruit, Organic

Being organic, this essential oil is sourced from plants or herbs cultivated and processed using organic principles.

 

Botanical Name: citrus paradisi Macfady.

Synonyms:  Cirtus racemosa, Citrus decumana var. racemosa, Citrus maxima var. racemosa, shaddock fruit

Family:  Rutaceae

 

Chemical Composition includes:

(+) Limonene @ 84.8% to 95.4%

B-Myrcene @ 1.4% to 3.6%

x-Pinene @ 0.2% to 1.0%

Nootkatone @ 0.1% to 0.8%

 

It is a chemical called nootkatone that gives grapefruit its characteristic taste.  There are over 100 different compounds with monoterpenes accounting for approximately 95%.

 

Precautions / Contraindications:  

hototoxic – Avoid using on the skin, even when diluted 12 hours before going out into the sun or exposure to UV rays; may cause burns including blisters. 

Generally considered non-toxic, non-irritating, and non-sensitizing.

 

Like most citrus oils, Grapefruit is not very stable and can deteriorate quickly upon exposure to air, moisture and daylight.  Avoid using old or oxidated oils.

Keep all essential oils out of the reach of children, lids secured in a cool dark location. 

As with all essential oils, taking internally, ingesting or adding to food / beverages is not recommended and can cause harm.

Grapefruit has been showed to influence the sympathetic nervous system dysfunctions associated with hypertension.  Its uplifting and reviving aromas can be valuable allies for stress, depression and nervous exhaustion.  Good for those long winter days.

 

Actions supported by clinical studies

 

Antimicrobial – antifungal against molds associated with food spoilage, Canadia albicans, & A. niger. Studies have shown higher effectiveness in inhibiting MRSA and MSSA growth than vancomycin.  Antimicrobial effect is similar to that of Lemon.

Hepatoprotective 

 

Energetics / Chakra: Cooling, cleansing & decongesting, good for an overheated liver or sluggish lymphatic system including general irritability.

Can encourage the flow of stagnant Qi, associated with the Wood Element, which helps to alleviate feelings of frustration, irritability, stress and tension. 

 

Grapefruit can awaken the spirit from a slumber, reconnect mind, body and spirit with its energising & enlivening aromas. Use whenever feeling drained, depressed or strung out.  Helps focus our thoughts on the positive aspects of life.

Oil & Aromatic Description: yellowish to greenish yellow or pale orange-yellow oil.  Aroma is fresh citrus, with a note of sweetness.

Blends well with: 

Bergamot, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Neroli, Sweet Orange & Sandalwood for nervous system regulation

For fatigue, feelings of blahness / apathy try blending with Basil, Black Pepper, Cardoman, Ginger, Lemon, Lime, Sweet Orange or Rosemary.
