Aromatic Alchemy - Essential Oils for Stress, Focus and Nervous System Support

One of the things I enjoy exploring is how aroma can influence the way we move through a period of time — a mood, a phase, or even those moments where we just feel a little off.

Sometimes I find myself overwhelmed, mentally scattered, emotionally flooded, or caught in a loop of racing thoughts. Other times, I simply need a little help settling my nervous system so I can focus and transition onward.

As I worked with my “aromatic alchemy experiments” over the past few months, I began noticing a pattern emerging in my daily practice. The words I use to describe this pattern are:

Shift Support Progress

This sequence isn’t about rigid steps or timelines. Instead, it follows your intuitive flow — reflecting how your nervous system naturally responds. Sometimes the shift can be felt after just a few deep breaths. Other times, the body needs a few minutes to regain balance and feel ready to move forward.

 Suggested Ways to Enjoy Aromatic Alchemy

I use a personal inhaler or diffuser but you can use the opened bottle, or place a drop or two on a cotton ball or tissue; be careful not to get any of oil on your skin. 

When doing breathwork with essential oils, I hold my personal inhaler about 6 inches below my nose and:

• Gently inhale for a count of four
• Hold for four
• Follow with a long, slow exhale

Repeat this for 2–3 intentional breaths, then take similar paced breaths without the oil for about a minute. This cycle can be repeated several times.

I like to move my body softly and find small, intentional movements paired with the aroma & breathing help bring awareness back into my body, gently supporting the nervous system to shift out of “panic mode” and into a more regulated, grounded state. 

They don’t need to be perfect or structured. Even small movements can help signal safety, release tension, and deepen the effect of the aroma.

Lets loook at the 3 different phases & essential oils used in Aromatic Alchemy.

Phase 1: SHIFT – Using Essential Oils to Interrupt Stress & Overwhelm

The first step is gently interrupting whatever loop we are caught in — stress, worry, racing thoughts, sensory overload, rumination, or emotional overwhelm. Certain aromas can act like a soft pause, helping the brain slow down just enough for the body to take a deeper breath.

For this phase, I often reach for oils that act as Uplifters or Clarifiers.

Uplifters bring brightness and emotional lift when things feel heavy
Clarifiers help refresh the mind when thoughts feel foggy or scattered

Examples of Uplifters include:
Bergamot – Citrus bergamia
Bright • uplifting • gently clarifying

Sweet Orange – Citrus sinensis
Warm • cheerful • mood-lifting

Some Clarifiers include:
Lavender – Lavandula angustifolia
Soft • balancing • calming clarity

Rosemary – Rosmarinus officinalis
Sharp • stimulating • focusing

Peppermint – Mentha × piperita
Cooling • awakening • mentally refreshing 

Safety note:

• Bergamot essential oil can be phototoxic depending on the variety. Avoid applying it to skin before sun exposure unless using a bergapten-free version.

• People with epilepsy, seizure disorders, or uncontrolled high blood pressure are generally advised to avoid strong or prolonged exposure to Rosemary.

• Peppermint should be avoided around infants and very young children, and care should be taken when diffusing in shared spaces. 

Physical movement cue
Lift your shoulders toward your ears as you inhale.
Slowly roll them back and down as you exhale. 

Signs the shift may be happening
• Your breathing becomes slightly deeper with a longer exhale
• Your shoulders or jaw begin to relax
• The mental “loop” pauses, even briefly
• You feel a small emotional lift or sense of space

This phase can last anywhere from a few breaths to a few minutes. Even a small reset can be enough to move into the next phase.

 Phase 2: SUPPORT – Allowing the nervous system to begin to settle, and relax into the relief

Once the intensity begins to shift, the body often benefits from a little grounding support to stabilize.

This phase focuses on oils that feel balancing, stabilizing, or calming — encouraging the nervous system to settle into a steadier rhythm. 

For this phase, I often reach for oils that act as Regulators or Anchors.

Regulators help bring the nervous system back toward balance
Anchors provide a sense of grounding, familiarity, and emotional steadiness

Regulators include:
Lavender – Lavandula angustifolia
Calming • balancing • soothing

Your current favorite Oil:
Do you have a favorite oil that naturally helps you feel safe, calm, or “back in your body.” That oil can become one of your most powerful regulators and anchors. Use it whenever you feel the need to stop the cycle, regain your balance and move forward.

My favorite oil is Bergamot – Citrus bergamia
Bright • comforting • emotionally balancing • gently grounding

When I need an Anchor / Expander, I reach for:

 Frankincense – Boswellia serrata
Centering • steadying • reflective

Cedarwood – Cedrus atlantica
Grounding • warm • stabilizing

Patchouli – Pogostemon cablin
Earthy • rich • anchoring

 Physical movement cue
Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly.
Take three slow breaths, noticing the rise and fall of the body.

 Signs the support phase is working
• Muscles soften — shoulders drop, jaw unclenches
• Emotional intensity begins to ease
• The body feels calmer and more settled 

This phase often lasts a few minutes. This is where I like to slow down and not rush.

Phase 3: PROGRESS – Using Essential Oils for Focus, Clarity, and Moving Forward

 Once the nervous system settles, it becomes easier to focus, make decisions, and move forward with the next step.

 For this phase, I often reach for oils that act as Clarifiers or Expanders.

Clarifiers help sharpen focus and support clear thinking
Expanders encourage reflection, creativity, and a broader perspective

 Clarifiers include:
Rosemary – Rosmarinus officinalis
Clear • stimulating • mentally focusing

Peppermint – Mentha × piperita
Fresh • energizing • sharpening

Expander / Anchor Oils:
Frankincense – Boswellia serrata
Grounding • steadying • reflective

Rose – Rosa damascena
Soft • opening • emotionally supportive

Geranium – Pelargonium graveolens
Harmonizing • steady • uplifting

Vetiver – Vetiveria zizanoides
Heavy • calming • deeply rooted

Ylang Ylang – Cananga odorata
Soothing • sensual • releasing

 Again, feel free to use your favorite oil at any time you feel the need.  It can be your regulator, your anchor and biggest supporter. 

Physical movement cue
Sit upright and gently roll your neck from side to side.
Stretch your arms upward.
Take one slow inhale of the aroma before beginning your next activity.

 The goal of this phase is to support:
• Clearer, more organized thinking
• Improved focus, confidence, and gentle motivation
• Steady energy rather than scattered or depleted
• A calm but alert state, rather than hypervigilance

 This phase may begin within minutes of the initial shift, though timing will vary.

A Simple Morning practice using Essential Oils

 One of the easiest ways to explore this approach is during your morning routine.  Mornings already involve natural transitions — waking up, preparing for the day, and moving into daily life. Aroma can act as a gentle signal, helping guide the nervous system through those transitions.

 Shift — first hour of the day
A bright citrus oil such as Bergamot or Sweet Orange can help wake the senses and soften mental fog. 

Support — while getting ready
Lavender or Frankincense may help the nervous system settle into a steady rhythm.

 Progress — as you begin your day
A clarifying oil such as Rosemary to support focus and engagement.

Sometimes, it’s not about doing more — it’s about pausing long enough to shift how we experience our world.  Aromatherapy offers a simple way to use that pause with intention — a familiar aroma, a steady breath, and a moment to reset before moving forward.
